Renewable Energy Feed-in Tariff (FiT) (Residential Customers)

Powering a Smarter and Greener Tomorrow

We are entering an exciting era of smart use of energy. Everyone of us can play a part – big or small – in combating climate change. Sign up for the Renewable Energy Feed-in Tariff (FiT) Scheme today and build a sustainable future together.

What is Renewable Energy Feed-in Tariff (FiT)?

Renewable Energy Made Easy

You can take part in the scheme by installing a solar and/or wind power renewable energy system on your premises. Once the system is successfully connected to the CLP grid, you can earn FiT payments.

For more information about the solar energy generation, please visit Solar Energy Information page.

How Will I Benefit?

CLP will buy the electricity generated by your renewable energy system at a FiT rate and the amount will be reflected in your regular electricity bills.

Scheme Rates & Payment Calculation

Types of FiT Rates

Three types of FiT rates will be offered according to the generation capacity of your renewable energy system:

Capacity of the Renewable Energy System

FiT rate

(per unit of electricity -kWh)^

≤ 10 kW

HK$ 5

> 10 kW - ≤ 200 kW

HK$ 4

> 200 kW - ≤ 1MW

HK$ 3

^The rates listed above are effective from 1 Oct 2018 onwards and will be reviewed regularly.

Typical Case for Village Houses

A solar system comprises three major components:

How to Calculate Your Payback Period?

A solar system with a generation capacity of about 1kW in Hong Kong can generate around 1,000 units of electricity a year.

You can take part in this scheme if:

  • You are a registered CLP account holder
  • Your renewable energy system is powered by solar and/or wind and is located on your premises with a total generation capacity of up to 1MW
  • Your renewable energy system can be connected to the CLP network without any increase in capacity or network reinforcement work by CLP

Application Process, Simple and Easy

Please be reminded that the design, installation, operation and maintenance of your renewable energy system should comply with all applicable laws, regulations, guidelines, and safety and technical requirements. This includes compliance with the requirements set out under the Technical Guidelines on Grid Connection of Renewable Energy Power Systems and the Guidance Notes for Solar Photovoltaic (PV) System Installation, both issued by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (“EMSD”).

Application Methods

To apply, simply complete the electronic application form on the CLP website or CLP App and upload required documents.

Please prepare required documents and information before your submission.

  1. A copy of HKID Card, Passport or Business Registration Certificate (as applicable) for identity verification purposes
  2. Preliminary layout diagram of renewable energy system (sample)
  3. Preliminary renewable energy system information and single-line electrical diagram (sample)

The application receipt date will be counted on the date we received your application form and all the above required documents.

Please note that the application process will terminate automatically if it is not completed within the applicable validity period as defined in Section 5.5 of the Feed-in Tariff Scheme Terms and Conditions.

Technical Guidelines

You or your assigned contractor/engineering contact should read through all of the below guidelines to ensure your systems meets all the requirements in order to facilitate a smooth and successful application.

Major Updates of Technical Documents

  1. Technical Design Notes for Grid Connection of Small Renewable Energy Systems
This document outlines the design requirements and considerations for inverter-based RE Systems with generation capacity of up to 1MW and non-inverter-based RE Systems with generation capacity of up to 200kW.
  2. Grid Connection Requirements
This document sets out the general technical requirements for the parallel connection of the customer’s RE Systems connecting to the CLP’s 11kV or 380V system.
  3. Feed-in Tariff Scheme Standard Metering Requirements
This document sets out the requirements for the location, accommodation and operation of FiT Meters and electricity revenue meters for the purposes of the FiT Scheme.
  4. Operation Procedure Template (for Renewable Energy Systems)
A template with examples of what to include in the operation procedures to be submitted.
  5. Testing and Commissioning Template (for Renewable Energy Systems)
A template with examples of what to include in the testing and commissioning report to be submitted.
  6. Sample of renewable energy system preliminary layout diagram
  7. Sample of preliminary renewable energy system information and single-line electrical diagram
  8. Standard RE & FIT Telemetry Pre-commissioning Report Sample and Template
