Tips for dealing with power interruptions during typhoons

CLP provides a reliable and safe electricity supply to its customers at all times, even during Hong Kong’s typhoon season. However, extreme weather can cause occasional voltage dips and temporary interruptions to the electricity supply which may affect customers. We apologise for any inconvenience it may cause.

  • Stay calm. Use your mobile phone or a torch for lighting.
  • Check if other flats of your building are also affected. If so, call the management office of your building or estate to find out if the main switch has tripped or the power supply has been interrupted. If you do not have a management office, call CLP directly.
  • Keeps a light switched on so you will know when the electricity comes back on.
  • If the power outage is limited to your home or office, check if the main switch or circuit breaker has been tripped. Contact your building management office if applicable.
  • If there is any life-supporting electrical equipment on your premises, contact the nearby hospital or call the emergency hotline 999 for immediate support.

  • You can report power outages or emergency incidents using an eForm.
  • Click the chatbot icon on the right edge of the screen on the CLP website to communicate online.
  • Send an email message through the CLP 中電 fan page on Facebook fan page.
  • Call our 24-hour Emergency Service hotline on 2728 8333. (Our Emergency Service hotline may be very busy during typhoons and it may take longer than usual to reach a Customer Relations Officer. Please consider using other ways to contact us first.)

  • In most cases, CLP will carry out maintenance work immediately and try to restore power as soon as possible.
  • If the damage is severe or the roads are blocked, maintenance work may take longer. Please be understanding in these circumstances.
  • You can call 2728 8333 and provide your electricity account number to an automated voice service to check on the status of your power supply or to report an outage.


How will I be kept informed about the progress of any repairs?

Customers with smart meters will receive alerts about power outages caused by supply network issues through the CLP app*, or mobile SMS or email.  (*Excluding incidents caused by a failure of customers’ electrical equipment or during planned outages.)
