Wire Inspection
- If you are moving into a new home of a building with more than 15 years of history, pay extra attention to the possibly aged wires and plugs, which are considered haphazard. You are advised to run an examination on the household electrical appliances. Before starting renovation, you should also check the following:
- All large consumption appliances (e.g. electric water heater, air conditioner and etc.) should be supplied by separate circuits
- A dedicated circuit should be equipped for socket outlets in kitchen
- All circuits for socket outlets should be protected by Residual Circuit Device (RCD)
- The height of each socket outlets is 150mm from floor level
- Low voltage circuits should be separated from extra-low voltage circuits (e.g. TV antenna line, telephone line and etc.)
- To avoid using too many extension cords, the number of socket outlets at each location of your premise should be well planned
- Socket outlets in bathroom should be installed in accordance to the Code of Practice for the Electricity (Wiring) Regulations, otherwise water-proof socket outlets should be used
- Electrical equipment used in bathroom should be of the double insulation type or water-proof type
Important: Per the Electricity Ordinance of Hong Kong, all work in relation to electrical installations, including repairs and testing, must be carried out by a Registered Electrical Worker (REW), who must thereafter issue a “ Work Completion Certificate” (WR1). You are therefore urged to ensure you hire an REW for any electrical job on your premises.
