Wire Inspection

  • If you are moving into a new home of a building with more than 15 years of history, pay extra attention to the possibly aged wires and plugs, which are considered haphazard. You are advised to run an examination on the household electrical appliances. Before starting renovation, you should also check the following:
  1. All large consumption appliances (e.g. electric water heater, air conditioner and etc.) should be supplied by separate circuits
  2. A dedicated circuit should be equipped for socket outlets in kitchen
  3. All circuits for socket outlets should be protected by Residual Circuit Device (RCD)
  4. The height of each socket outlets is 150mm from floor level
  5. Low voltage circuits should be separated from extra-low voltage circuits (e.g. TV antenna line, telephone line and etc.)
  6. To avoid using too many extension cords, the number of socket outlets at each location of your premise should be well planned
  7. Socket outlets in bathroom should be installed in accordance to the Code of Practice for the Electricity (Wiring) Regulations, otherwise water-proof socket outlets should be used
  8. Electrical equipment used in bathroom should be of the double insulation type or water-proof type

Important: Per the Electricity Ordinance of Hong Kong, all work in relation to electrical installations, including repairs and testing, must be carried out by a Registered Electrical Worker (REW), who must thereafter issue a “ Work Completion Certificate” (WR1). You are therefore urged to ensure you hire an REW for any electrical job on your premises.

Electrical Appliances

  • When you are planning to add items to your new home, we suggest you Adopt Energy Efficient Appliances. Pay a visit to the CLP Eco Home, where you will find hundreds of energy efficient household appliances showcase. You can even try the appliances out at the spot
  • Check whether these electrical appliances have any electrical leakage problems and whether they are functioning properly. To assemble/disassemble electric appliance, or draw wires, you must employ qualified electricians for the task. Remember to jot down the readings on the ammeter for water and electricity before testing

Moving Tips

One or two weeks in advance

  • Make an appointment with the moving company for an on-site estimate at your home, so that better arrangements can be made
  • Make use of the Moving List you previously prepared
  • Read carefully and find out whether your interests have been protected by articles in the agreement, services coverage, promised moving date and time within the budget of the moving expenses

24 hours in advance

  • One day before moving, refrigerator should be defrosted and water in the washing machine emptied out. On the day of moving, these machines should not be in operation, to avoid any possible damage to them
  • Check and record the licence plate number of the porter. Reserve parking spaces for the moving vehicles both at the old and new homes

On the day of moving

  • The contact person who signed the agreement with the moving company should be on the spot to oversee the moving
  • You can ask the professional movers to wrap piano, antiques and bulky items for you
  • Empty out all drawers and cabinets
  • Carefully check and count whether all objects have been delivered to the new destination. Demand for compensation from the parties concerned if losses are identified. Take pictures, if necessary, as proof to claim for compensation or indemnity insurance
  • Don't use the refrigerator, air-conditioner and dehumidifier right after moving. It is better to wait for at least two hours before plugging them in again, so that the compressor can be protected for longer usage. It is important to know that during the moving, the incrustation can be stirred up. You have to wait for it to settle before starting the appliances again, otherwise the high and low-tension valves can be silted up
  • If the moving takes place in a rainy season, be prepared with a mackintosh blanket to protect the objects
  • Always check if the items are secure on the truck before leaving, and when the unloading is finished, make sure nothing is left behind
  • Switch off the lights, and shut all the doors and windows properly before leaving the old house
