Between air-conditioners and RCACs, inverter air-conditioners and non-inverter air-conditioners, and different air-conditioners with various HP, it is common to get confused.

Let us walk you through on how to select a suitable air-conditioner!

Horse Power (HP) depends on floor area

First, look for the air-conditioner or RCAC with the suitable HP. See above image for details:

2. Inverter air-conditioners VS conventional air-conditioners

Inverter air-conditioner can adjust its compressor rotation speed to vary its cooling power, hence reduces energy consumption, unlike conventional ones which are required to maintain high compressor rotation speed. The below graph provides a brief overview of the mechanism of inverter air-conditioners.

The Consumer Council has examined inverter and conventional air-conditioners in 2016, and discovered the former could save around 40% of the electricity cost per year on average. The difference on electricity cost could be up to HK$439. Given the limited price difference between the two types of air-conditioners, it is worth considering purchasing the inverter air-conditioner!

3. Cooling capacity and air handling capacity on the energy efficiency label

Level of energy saving between an air-conditioner and a RCAC with a Grade 1 energy label could still vary. You could calculate the efficiency by looking at the cooling capacity and estimated energy consumption on energy label. (See next article for detailed calculation.) You might be able to save more electricity cost by choosing one with a timer!

Lastly, location and installation of air-conditioner are also crucial factors. We could help arranging a qualified technician for your air-conditioner installation.

Checklist of air-conditioner/RCAC installation:

  • Installation should be secured in place to prevent excessive noise caused by vibration. Insecure AC installation might cause the equipment to come lose and fall during strong wind or impact.
  • If drainage facility is available, drain pipe should be connected to remove the condensation water.
  • Avoid installing the AC under direct sunlight as the heat will affect its operation efficiency.
  • Since cold air descends, the AC system should be installed at least 1.5M above Ground.
