Solar energy potential in a given location is mainly determined by blockage. Blockage means a building or object is located directly in the sun’s path. Even temporary blockage of sunlight limits the number of hours and days of solar energy in a year.
- Solar potential is highest in summer, but on average this figure is relatively steady over the course of a year in Hong Kong.
Monthly Average Daily Solar Irradiation
*Solar irradiation data gathered by Hong Kong Observatory's King's Park weather station over the past 20 years.
Requirements of Installing Solar Energy Devices
- Roof space and/or permanent open areas are required to install solar energy equipment. For solar panels, additional free space is required to allow for batteries.
- Average solar potential can be projected by examining the amount of blockage in a sun path over the course of a year, coupled with past solar figures from Hong Kong Observatory.
- Installation of solar panels require substantial space and shelter for battery storage. For the best results, position them at elevation angle of 22.5º facing South direction.
