About the power station

Three simple cycle gas turbines in Penny's Bay Power Station.

Penny’s Bay Power Station is a support facility in our generating system. The station is in the eastern part of Lantau Island. It has 3 simple cycle gas turbines that can be started within 12 minutes. This rapid-response mechanism is designed to:

  • Meet short-duration peak demands; and
  • Serve as a backup in the unlikely event of interruptions or setbacks.

Penny’s Bay is connected to the local 132kV transmission network on Lantau Island and then to our main grid. This is achieved through a submarine cable extending to the New Territories.

Emission monitoring

To support the Government’s emissions requirements, we collect and track our power stations’ emissions. We then apply this information into the daily operation of the power plants.

Strategic partnership

CAPCO group photo

Penny’s Bay Power Station is owned by Castle Peak Power Company Limited (CAPCO). CAPCO is a joint venture of CLP power Hong Kong Limited and China Southern Power Grid International (HK) Co., Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of China Southern Power Grid Co. Ltd (CSG), under a 70/30 partnership.

CLP has been a close business associate of CSG since 2014.

In view of the increasing integration between Hong Kong and Guangdong, we see the strategic partnership with CSG as a natural extension of our past collaboration.

We believe our collaboration with CSG will pave the way for new business opportunities for both parties in the long run.
