Large Infrastructure Projects

Find out how we support the electricity needs of Hong Kong infrastructure.

Supporting local infrastructure

We support large infrastructure projects in Hong Kong by:

  • Designing their power grids; and
  • Facilitating their timely completion.

In every supply project, we will consider safety, the interest of local communities and the impact on the environment.

Examples of past projects

Data centre hub

In 2014, we built the Chun Yat Street Substation in Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate. The estate is one of the few potential sites for data centres in Hong Kong. Data centres have large power demands and need stringent power reliability. To support this, we designed a unique supply configuration.

For the first time in Hong Kong, we adopted a segregated twin switchgear room design. For extra safety, we connected the substation to 2 independent power sources. This helps the station to meet its high capacity and reliability requirements.

Kai Tak development plan

Since 1995, we have been engaged in the Kai Tak Development Plan. Besides commercial and residential,  the plan includes a cruise terminal and MTR’s Shatin-to-Central Link.

We have built two 132kV substations since 2012. Our environmentally-friendly substations:

  • House solar power systems and rain recycling systems; and
  • Are surrounded by greenery.

HK-Zhuhai-Macau bridge

We built a 132kV substation for the HK-Zhuhai-Macau bridge. The 29.6km bridge connects Hong Kong to Zhuhai and Macau.

The substation’s electricity is used for:

  • Cross-boundary cargo processing and passenger clearance;
  • Fire station cum ambulance depots;
  • Public transport interchanges; and
  • Maintenance depots etc.
