“Life was difficult several years ago when my husband suffered from a stroke. Since we have come to the Hotmeal Canteen to have our meals, we both eat healthier and feel less stressful financially. The Canteen is like our second home. I have introduced the Canteen to my neighbours who have similar needs. I volunteer at the canteen when I am free,” said Yuk Fung, one of the beneficiaries.

The first CLP Hotmeal Canteen was opened at Shun Ning Road in Sham Shui Po in 2011, in partnership with The Hong Kong Council of Social Service and Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service, serving up dietician-supervised meals to the underprivileged at a nominal cost.

In 2014, CLP Hotmeal Canteen expanded to Kwai Tsing and Kwun Tong in partnership with Po Leung Kuk, providing nutritious breakfasts, lunches and dinners at discounted prices of $4 and $12 respectively to elderly people.

In 2018, CLP Power together with Po Leung Kuk opened a new Hotmeal Canteen at the Po Leung Kuk Eco-Home for the Senior cum Sunny Green Day Care Centre for the Senior on the Fu Cheong Estate in Sham Shui Po, offering evening meals to single elderly people, elderly couples and families in need. It also provides special meals for people with special dietary requirements or conditions such as diabetes.

The original canteen at Shun Ning Road will stay open until June 2018. Canteen users will be given priority to use the new canteen run by Po Leung Kuk on the Fu Cheong Estate.

Today, the CLP Hotmeal Canteens serve around 10,000 meals a month to people in need in Sham Shui Po, Kwai Tsing and Kwun Tong.
