Designing an Energy-Saving Home: Must-Read Tips for Installing Power Outlets

Before renovating the house, there are several details to be calculated and planned carefully. One of the most significant parts is the arrangement of electrical outlets throughout the house. We have compiled some practical tips that renovation beginners might not pay attention to, helping to design electrical outlets that are both convenient and energy-saving.

  • Choose smart plugs
Smart plugs automatically cut power when appliances are on standby or enter sleep mode, significantly reducing standby energy consumption. No wonder they’re called “energy-saving magic tools”; even Hong Kong’s Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) encourages the public to use them!

  • Use outlets with switches: Consider installing multifunction outlets with USB ports in living rooms and bedrooms, as well as outlets or power strips with individual switches. They’re convenient and help save energy.

  • Keep away from water and induction hobs: In the kitchen, use waterproof and moisture-resistant outlets. During renovation, pay attention to outlet placement and height. Don’t take the easy route by installing outlets too close to water sources or to an induction cooker.

  • Ensure proper grounding: After renovation, during inspection and hand-over, make sure every outlet has a proper ground connection to prevent the risk of electric leakage.
