Pairing Water-Saving Devices with Energy-Efficient Electric Water Heaters

Winter's arrived cold and gray and you may be prepping your water heater for winter. We provide helpful tips and advice so you can easily choose the best-fit electric water heaters, along with the recommendation of low-flow showerheads, that can rival the electricity guzzlers and help you to save money.

There are three types of electric water heaters: instant, central storage and showerhead storage.

Instant type is convenient, providing hot water without preheating, but some products work with high energy consumption. Make sure the residential building is equipped with a 3-phase power supply before purchase. Central storage type has a larger water capacity ranging from 18L to 38L and it can connect with multiple outlet pipework. Showerhead storage type has a water capacity ranging from 12L to 23L and can only connect with single outlet pipework. Both central storage and showerhead storage types are available with rapid heating technology, which allows you to take a 30-minute hot shower in just 5 minutes of pre-heating.

The best practice of usage is (1) to reduce water usage or (2) to lower the temperature/ shorten heating time. You can consider installing a water-efficient showerhead with WELS label (a high star-rating indicates a low water consumption and high-water efficiency) to reduce water usage further and save on heating costs. Also, leaving it on constantly can seriously increase your electricity consumption. Turn the heater off right after the shower to avoid unnecessary electricity waste.
