CLP Power Teams up with Restaurants and Businesses on Earth Day to Reduce Carbon Emissions by 50 Tonnes with Renewable Energy Certificates

Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22, highlights global environmental challenges. This year’s theme “Our Power, Our Planet”, calls for collective action to advance renewable energy and create a sustainable future. In support of the initiative, CLP Power encouraged 23 customers from catering and other business sectors to purchase CLP Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). The certificates help offset carbon emissions from electricity use and support the development of local renewable energy. 

The response was overwhelmingly positive. Together, the customers have purchased nearly 130,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of CLP RECs, equivalent to cutting around 50 tonnes of carbon emissions.

Professor Simon Wong, Chairman and CEO of LH Group, shared that the Group has been purchasing the CLP RECs for five consecutive years. He noted that the initiative has helped them achieve low-carbon emission of one day operation as well as support the local renewable energy development.

Mr. Wong Ka Kin, representative of NAGE Taiwanese Cuisine, agreed that purchasing CLP RECs helped offset carbon emissions of their seven restaurants. He also encouraged other restaurants to adopt low-carbon operations to build a greener future.

Since its introduction in 2019, CLP REC has sold over 630 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of RECs as of the end of last year, equivalent to a reduction of about 245,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. Ms Lena Low , Senior Director of Customer Success and Experience at CLP Power, said: “CLP RECs help business customers accelerate their carbon reduction goals. We are delighted to join hands with various customers to support Earth Day, raise the carbon awareness and encourage the local renewable energy development.”

CLP Power will continue to promote various renewable energy initiatives and partner with customers across industries to reduce carbon emissions and drive towards sustainability development.
